France qualified by beating Argentina 4:3 with Mbappe scoring a brace. Later that day, Uruguay saw off Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal side, thanks to a double form Cavani in a match that ended 2:1.Neymar led Brazil to beat Mexico 2:0 while Belgium came from 2 goals down to beat Japan 3:2 in a spectacular fashion. Spain lost to host nation Russia on penalties after a 1:1 draw just like the Croatia Denmark fixture which was also decided by penalties after a 1:1 showdown. The Swedes beat Switzerland 1-0, while England needed penalties to get past Colombia.
